Pasteurization Tanks
Balance Tanks and Surge Vessels
Balance tanks ensure consistent flow to the pasteurizer, preventing air introduction and maintaining proper heat exchanger operation. They provide buffer capacity between batch reception and continuous pasteurization.
Capacity Range: 500L - 3,000L
Material Grade: Grade 304 / 316L
Applications:
- Raw milk balance tank before pasteurizer
- Pasteurized milk surge tank after pasteurizer
- Cream balance for separation systems
- Yogurt pasteurization tanks with jacketed construction
CIP Systems - Clean-In-Place for Automated Dairy Sanitation
Automated cleaning capability transforms dairy operation efficiency and reliability. CIP (Clean-In-Place) systems enable equipment cleaning without disassembly, reducing labor costs while improving cleaning consistency and validation capability.
Complete CIP System Components
- Chemical Storage Tanks: Caustic, acid, sanitizer, and rinse tanks in Grade 304 or 316L
- CIP Supply Tank: Heated supply tank with temperature control (60-80°C)
- CIP Return Tank: Return vessel allowing recirculation through system
- Pump Station: Centrifugal pumps sized for turbulent flow (Reynolds number >10,000)
- Heat Exchanger: Plate or tubular design with steam/hot water heating
- Controls: PLC-based automation with temperature, flow, and chemical monitoring
- Distribution Piping: Supply manifolds and return piping with sanitary valves
Sanitary Design Construction Standards
All dairy tanks are designed following 3-A Sanitary Standards principles:
Self-Draining Geometry
Minimum 2% slope toward discharge. All horizontal surfaces slope without sag pockets where milk can pool.
Radiused Internal Corners
Minimum 3mm radius eliminating square corners where cleaning solutions cannot reach and bacteria can harbor.
Smooth Internal Surfaces
2B finish standard, electropolished Ra ≤ 0.8µm optional for enhanced cleanability and FDA compliance.
TIG-Welded Construction
All product-contact surfaces TIG welded with ground and polished weld beads.
Material Selection for Dairy Applications
Grade 304 - The Dairy Standard
AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel (18% chromium, 8-10.5% nickel) provides the corrosion resistance, cleanability, and cost-effectiveness that make it the specification standard for dairy product contact surfaces. Milk's pH of 6.5-6.7 and chloride content below 100 ppm creates a relatively benign corrosion environment where 304's passive layer performs reliably.
Grade 316L - For Demanding Environments
Grade 316L becomes necessary for coastal installations, acidic dairy products (yogurt with pH 4.0-4.6), and facilities using high-chloride water supply. The 2-3% molybdenum addition provides enhanced resistance to pitting corrosion in chloride environments.
