Food & Beverage Tanks

Custom stainless steel processing vessels for juice, fermentation, mixing, and hot water systems

Custom Stainless Steel Processing Vessels

Pelican Metal Craft's Fabrication Division engineers custom stainless steel tanks for food and beverage manufacturing across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania. From fruit juice extraction and holding tanks requiring 316L grade for citric acid resistance, to mixing tanks with CIP-compatible agitators for sauce and condiment manufacturing, to brewing vessels with temperature jackets and pressure relief for beer and kombucha production - we engineer complete process systems for food safety-regulated operations where equipment design directly impacts product quality and shelf life.

Food and beverage manufacturing in East Africa operates under increasing regulatory scrutiny - KEBS certification requirements, retailer supplier audit programs (Carrefour, Naivas, Quickmart technical standards), export documentation for EAC regional markets, and HACCP implementation for formal food business operations. This regulatory environment demands equipment engineered to international sanitary standards where material selection, fabrication quality, and documentation packages directly impact compliance success.

Juice Tanks

Juice Extraction & Processing Tanks

East Africa's fruit processing sector - serving passion fruit, mango, pineapple, citrus, and mixed fruit juice markets - requires stainless steel equipment throughout extraction, clarification, pasteurization, and packaging operations. Fruit juice processing presents specific engineering challenges that demand specialized tank design.

Capacity Range: 500L - 10,000L

Material Grade: Grade 316L (MANDATORY)

Why Grade 316L is Mandatory:

Fruit juices are acidic, typically with pH ranging from 2.8 to 4.2 depending on the fruit. This acidic environment causes pitting corrosion in standard Grade 304 stainless steel. Grade 316L contains 2-3% molybdenum, providing superior resistance to pitting corrosion from organic acids (citric, malic, ascorbic), crevice corrosion in stagnant areas, and stress corrosion cracking.

Key Features:

  • Conical bottoms for sediment settling and complete drainage
  • Borosilicate sight glasses for visual process monitoring
  • Temperature jacket options for pasteurization integration
  • CIP spray ball installations for automated cleaning
  • Sanitary tri-clamp bottom discharge valves with full-port design
  • Level indication via sight glass tubes or capacitance probes

Mixing & Blending Tanks

Four cylindrical mixing tanks in clean factory setting

Mixing & Blending Tanks for Food Manufacturing

Homogeneous mixture of liquid ingredients, sauces, syrups, or food products requires properly engineered agitation systems. We fabricate mixing tanks for sauce production, beverage syrup blending, and any process requiring uniform incorporation of multiple ingredients.

Capacity Range: 200L - 8,000L

Material Grade: Grade 304 or 316L (based on product pH)

Key Features:

  • Marine blade, turbine, anchor, or helical ribbon agitators based on viscosity
  • Variable speed drives (VFD) for shear-sensitive products
  • Baffle installation to prevent vortex formation
  • Sanitary tri-clamp sight glasses for visual monitoring
  • Full-bore discharge valves preventing product holdup
  • Sample valves in high-circulation zones for representative verification
  • Jacketed options for heating and cooling during agitation

Fermentation Tanks

Four conical fermentation tanks in industrial warehouse

Fermentation Vessels for Brewing & Bioprocessing

Yogurt fermentation, beer brewing, kombucha production, and other fermented foods and beverages require precise temperature control during microbial culture growth phases. We fabricate fermentation vessels with engineered temperature control systems ensuring consistent product quality.

Capacity Range: 500L - 5,000L (larger capacities available on request)

Material Grade: Grade 304 or 316L

Key Features:

  • Jacketed temperature control (dimpled or half-pipe designs)
  • Pressure relief valves for CO2 generation during fermentation
  • Aseptic sample ports for culture monitoring without contamination
  • CIP spray ball installation for automated between-batch cleaning
  • Conical bottoms for yeast and sediment collection
  • Manway access with quick-opening clamp rings
  • Carbonation capability with pressure gauges and relief valves

Hot Water Storage & Distribution

Hot Water Storage & Distribution for Food Processing

Food processing facilities require reliable hot water supply for CIP cleaning, equipment sanitization, and process applications. We fabricate hot water storage and distribution systems rated for continuous high-temperature service.

Capacity Range: 500L - 10,000L

Material Grade: Grade 304 (standard) / Grade 316L (coastal or high-chloride environments)

Key Features:

  • High-temperature rating for continuous 95°C service
  • Polyurethane foam insulation minimizing heat loss
  • Internal baffles preventing thermal stratification
  • Pressure relief valves and vacuum breakers for safety
  • Electric heating elements, steam injection, or boiler integration options
  • Circulation pump packages for uniform temperature distribution
  • Distribution manifolds and return line provisions

Sanitary Design & Standards

All food and beverage tanks are designed following 3-A Sanitary Standards and European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) principles. Self-draining geometry with minimum 2% slope toward discharge prevents product pooling. Radiused internal corners (minimum 3mm) eliminate harboring points for bacteria. TIG-welded construction with ground and polished weld beads on all product-contact surfaces ensures cleanability. Dead leg elimination and product zone isolation prevent contamination.

Self-Draining Geometry

Minimum 2% slope toward discharge point. All horizontal surfaces slope without sag pockets where product can pool or cleaning solutions stagnate.

Radiused Internal Corners

Minimum 3mm radius eliminating square corners where cleaning solutions cannot reach and bacteria cannot harbor.

Smooth Internal Surfaces

2B finish standard, electropolished Ra ≤ 0.8µm optional for enhanced cleanability and food safety compliance.

TIG-Welded Construction

All product-contact surfaces TIG welded with ground and polished weld beads ensuring no crevices or harborage points.

Dead Leg Elimination

No branches or connections that don't drain completely. Dead legs isolated with sanitary diaphragm valves.

CIP Compatibility

Spray ball installation providing complete surface coverage. CIP return connection positioned for complete drainage.

Material Selection for Food & Beverage

Food manufacturing material selection requires understanding product pH, chloride content, organic acid presence, and cleaning chemical compatibility. Grade 304 (18% Cr, 8-10.5% Ni) is suitable for neutral pH foods (4.5-7.0), dry ingredients, and general processing. Grade 316L (16-18% Cr, 10-14% Ni, 2-3% Mo) is mandatory for acidic foods (pH <4.5), high-salt products, and coastal installations. For highly acidic applications like fruit juices, fermented beverages, and tomato-based sauces, Grade 316L provides superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance that protects equipment longevity and product quality.
